Critical issues in the quarantine-ship system for migrants – Analysis and requests

More than 150 organizations and associations from various European countries support the call to abolish quarantine ships for migrants in Italy.

Since April 2020, quarantine ships in Italy have been used to monitor the health of migrants who have arrived by sea. The use of these ships in times of the corona pandemic testifies to a restriction on freedom of movement and the violation of the ban on discrimination because quarantine ships are used for migrants only.

There is a lack of any transparency or information for those detained there. There is no special care for those in need of particular protection. Physical, psychological suffering and trauma are intensified. In addition, it is known that ships are not a safe accommodation against the spread of the pandemic.

The document, signed by more than 150 Italian and international organizations, scientists, and experts, highlights these issues and calls on the Italian government to discontinue the quarantine ships and, instead to ensure safe, appropriate, dignified accommodation on land. Because the right to life and health must not depend on nationality and origin!
