HEALTH, EXPENDABLE RIGHTS

The violence migrants suffer on their migratory journey constitutes existential traumatic events. In addition, they live outraging experiences in Europe in the venture of recognition of their own identity, in social isolation, in the absence of a regulated life. All this constitutes emotional consequences with which migrants must live in their burdensome fight for their rights. The process of vulnerabilization of migrants becomes even more accentuated with the security decree, that attacks directly the physical and psychical wellbeing of the people and renders health an expendable right.

DISGRACE UNVEILED AND RESCUE THAT DOESN’T TAKE PLACE

Europe and Italy have chosen to outsource the fictional rescue of migrants at sea to Libya while treating rescue ships of NGOs as criminals. The legal team of the Mediterranea Saving Humans has disclosed recordings between Italian and Libyan authorities concerning the safeguarding that happened 18th of march. The recordings confirm the inadequacy of the rescue by the so-called Libyan coast guard. Rescue operations from ONGs are impeded – like the one from Sea Watch III, which is still blocked by the wish of the Dutch ministry of infrastructure. So, migrants are left to drown or are brought back in the Libyan torture camps from where they flee, without any possible testimony of these crimes.

HOSPITALITY IS POLITICAL. FROM THE MANAGEMENT OF THE NEW GOVERNMENT TO INTEGRATION IN ZARZIS, TUNISIA

The legal measures of the era Lega-5 Star Movement overturn the reception system, modifying functions and approaches through cuts in spending, the dismantling of SPRAR*, the reduction of services and operators. However, the persistence against those who fight for the rights of migrants cannot hinder support initiatives that emerge from civil society. One of those is the Tunisian project in Zarzis, on the border with Libya, where out of the daily experiences of death due to European politics a new network of hospitality is born that support migrants and fight for their rights.
